McNally tells all of the techniques in his book, which he calls an irreverent brain dump of accumulated knowledge presented as a diary. I respectfully and completely disagree with the assertion that the title of yotshoe book should be the Nikon Hot Shoe Diaries. Feb 10, Darren Smith rated it it was amazing.

It does give you ideas as to how to light creatively in different circumstances. Along the way, of course, there will be lots and lots of pictures, some good, some not so. I picked this book up right after it was released earlier this year. The book will not be an instruction manual. See McNally’s own website o An accomplished and widely-respected photographer, Joe McNally got his start as a newspaper photographer in New York, eventually becoming a staff photographer for Time magazine and a diariex contributor to National GeographicSports Illustratedand numerous other publications.
As the title suggests, this book is narrower in focus, djaries less useful to me personally because I’m not yet a DSLR user. The best information here is about blending flash with ambient light. There are a few chapters about the gear side of things, but that is all Nikon gear. The book that turned me on to McNally and arguably has had the most influence on my understanding of strobist work and off-camera flash.
Intermediate to Advanced Value: And more diagrams, I found the sketches he posted in some chapters way more clear than long winded descriptions of where the flashes were.
He only diwries portable flashes Nikon Speedlights, what Canon calls Speedlitesso you will not find anything about studio or continual lights. Nuts ‘n’ Bolts In an improvement over his first book, Joe actually spends some time talking about the gear that he uses — complete with pictures.
While Joe uses Nikon gear, the book is somewhat brand agnostic. Today your book arvived. K-man, shot with small flash, just may be a recurring character in the book.
