She’s regulated to a supporting character role in this book, which was a disappointment for me as McDevitt has made her a likable character. The best scientific parts jadk this book are actually around the apparently more minor discovery of the nova-like bursts mcdeivtt light, and while I don’t know how McDevitt could have added more to that part of the story, I wish he had.

We don’t get the small payoffs and moments of action that were built into Chindiand the book and the reader’s attention suffer for it.

There are no ancient archeological mysteries to solve and whether the ultimate quest of saving the cuddly aliens succeeds or not isn’t going to influ It’s hard to focus on reading for me at the moment, so I ended up reading this book a couple of pages at a time, sometimes with weeks of not reading mcdevjtt.

She’s now an mcevitt for the Academy and when we do see her, she’s taking flak from everybody for not being able to grant inane wishes or she’s sending messages off to her star ship pilots I was somewhat disappointed in this book, especially when compared to its predecessor in the series, Chindi, which was an amazing book.

McDevitt’s writing style continues to be excellent and his Goompahs make for interesting aliens. A newly-discovered pre-industrial civilization, however, is directly in an omega’s path, and it will reach that planet in a matter of months.

That could have provided some of the feeling of constant discovery that kept the narrative drive higher in Chindi mcdeivtt, but there isn’t enough material to it to manage. McDevitt builds us up for final confrontation between Collingdale and the omega but just as it’s climaxing, McDevitt puts the scene “off camera”. I really like McDevitt, and his style, yet it is with difficulty that I recall the book I read 14 years ago, and that is a shame.

Omega ‘s ultimate thematic message is that when the chips are down, reason and science simply can’t cut it, and one needs, in the words of one character, the “priceless gift” of faith. From one book to another, even the characters who survive are forgettable.

This situation changes when a charmingly innocent young alien race is discovered just a few months before a cloud will obliterate it.

There are 11 cities on this planet, all fairly near each other. In other words, the heart of this book is a first contact story, but one between advanced humans and a more technologically primitive alien race. I don’t think I’ve ever read such stridently anti-science sentiments in the pages of a science fiction novel in my life.

I was glad to see him die. In this book, however, she’s no jakc a pilot. I enjoy McDevitt’s books. It is once again a menagerie of calm, heroic, intelligent, patient, thoughtful, inventive women carrying out the rescue while having to put up with stupid, vain, emotional, weak, thoughtless men getting in the way.

He has our heroes stage one phony divine miracle after another, and the Goompahs are saved, but only after an entire race of peaceable rationalists and empiricists is turned to cowering, weeping religious fanatics.
